In 2004, my husband and I were invited to visit our son’s kindergarten class to talk about our careers. I did not think that 5 year-olds would understand the remediation work that I do with the environmental firms, so I gathered up a variety of rocks and minerals and showed them to the students and explained what geology is about. The children were thrilled when I let them take some of the rock samples home. At that point, the idea for Mini Me Geology was born.
In 2006, I cut back my hours at the environmental firm and started Mini Me Geology (www.minimegeology.com). I realized that my mission as a professional geologist was to show children and adults the wonders of Earth. Mini Me Geology is a site where children, parents and educators can come to learn not only about great rocks and minerals but receive information about the science of geology. Our site offers rocks from around the world and kits not available anywhere else, project ideas for class or home, “Ask a Geologist,” puzzles to encourage learning, and curriculum ideas for teachers and homeschoolers.
Since starting the business, I have received lots positive feedback from parents and educators about our and the fact that we offer more than just a box of rocks, but a real opportunity to experience the Earth and learn. My experience with Mini Me Geology has led me to writing. While I write many eBooks to accompany our rock and mineral kits, I also wrote a non-fiction book that will teach you how to develop and launch your own product business like I did with Mini Me Geology. I also wrote a fiction book that ties science and adventure for young readers. This book, Blue John’s Cavern, is the first book in the Crystal Cave Adventures series. I am currently working on the next book in the series.
